Action 5 on Mapping and Assessment of Ecosystems and their Services (MAES) under target two of the EU 2020 Biodiversity Strategy foresees that: "Member States, with the assistance of the Commission, will map and assess the state of ecosystems and their services in their national territory by 2014, assess the economic value of such services, and promote the integration of these values into accounting and reporting systems at EU and national level by 2020".

EU Biodiversity Strategy to 2020 - The European Commission has adopted an ambitious new strategy to halt the loss of biodiversity and ecosystem services in the EU by 2020. There are six main targets, and 20 actions to help Europe reach its goal. Biodiversity loss is an enormous challenge in the EU, with around one in four species currently threatened with extinction and 88% of fish stocks over-exploited or significantly depleted.

OpenNESS aims to translate the concepts of Natural Capital (NC) and Ecosystem Services (ES) into operational frameworks that provide tested, practical and tailored solutions for integrating ES into land, water and urban management and decision-making. It examines how the concepts link to, and support, wider EU economic, social and environmental policy initiatives and scrutinizes the potential and limitations of the concepts of ES and NC.

OPERAs is a European research project which aims to bridge the gap between ecosystem science and practice. The project is focused on ecosystem services and natural capital science and on enabling stakeholders to apply these concepts in practice. OPERAs will work very closely with stakeholders throughout the project, to ensure producing valuable, cutting edge Ecosystem Science for Policy & Practice.

The Ecosystem Services Partnership (ESP) aims to enhance communication, coordination and cooperation, and to build a strong network of individuals and organizations. ES-Partnership enhances and encourages a diversity of approaches, while reducing unnecessary duplication of effort in the conceptualization and application of ecosystem services.

The Biodiversity Information System for Europe (BISE) is a single entry point for data and information on biodiversity supporting the implementation of the EU strategy and the Aichi targets in Europe. Bringing together facts and figures on biodiversity and ecosystem services, it links to related policies, environmental data centres, assessments and research findings from various sources.

Oppla is a new online platform, which aims to bring together knowledge about natural capital and ecosystem services from around Europe. Its overall purpose is to assist people in making nature work for the benefit of humankind.
